This is believed to be the day when the Goddess departs to Kailash, her heavenly abode, and bids adieu to her people.

Navaratri has a very interesting story associated with it. It was the battle between Goddess Durga and the demon called Mahishasoor. Mahishasoor was given the gift of immortality by Lord Brahma with the only condition that he can only be killed by a woman. He attacked the Earth, Heaven, and Hell. No God was able to defeat him. In the end, Lord Brahma, Lord Vishnu, and Lord Shiva created Goddess Durga to kill Mahishasoor. Goddess Durga fought with Mahishasoor for fifteen days as he keeps changing his forms to confuse Goddess Durga, but finally, he gets killed when he turned into a buffalo. Goddess Durga killed Mahishasoor on the day of Mahalaya with her Trishul.

Navratri signifies the victory of good over evil. This is the major festival held in honor of the divine feminine.
